Charges dropped against Times staff photographer Gurley

POSTED: August 13, 2014 1:38 a.m.

Obstruction charges against Times photographer Nat Gurley stemming from an incident with Hall County Sheriff’s Office deputies last Sept. 13 have been dismissed.

Hall County Solicitor Stephanie D. Woodard filed documents in state court Friday saying she would not pursue the case.

Gurley was charged after he arrived where a body was found off Lyman Street in Hall County to take photos and parked his vehicle at the end of the street well away from where crime scene tape was put in place. The man’s death later was ruled accidental.

Gurley was confronted by deputies who told him to leave the scene.

Gurley, 54, was arrested when he refused the deputies’ directive. He was booked into the Hall County Jail and later released on $2,700 bail.

The sheriff’s office said Gurley was interfering with an investigation. The Times and its attorneys contended Gurley was within his rights to be in the area.

In her letter, Woodard stated, “I do not believe a criminal conviction is necessary in order to insure co-existence for these two entities in our community.”
