High School Scoreboard: North Hall wins Battle of Branch

The North Hall volleyball team couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season.

The Lady Trojans did not drop a set against any of their five opponents on Saturday, cruising to the Gold Bracket championship at the Battle of the Branch tournament at Flowery Branch High.

North Hall opened the day with a 25-18, 25-7 victory over host Flowery Branch, then picked up victories against Chestatee (26-24, 25-16), Tucker (25-5, 25-7) and Lakeview (25-13, 25-22), before defeating Sandy Creek 26-24, 25-17 for the tournament championship.

Sydney Cleveland had 22 kills, 21 digs and 5 aces, while Lily Paschall had 74 assists and eight aces, Julie Daniels had 19 kills and 45 digs, Jen Mullican had 19 kills, nine blocks and 11 aces, Autumn Tucker had 20 kills, Makenzie Bryant had 50 digs and eight aces, and Kesley Little added 16 digs, five aces and an eight-point service run.

LADY DRAGONS TAKE SILVER: Jefferson opened the volleyball season by going 4-1 to win the Silver Bracket championship at the Battle of the Branch on Saturday at Flowery Branch High School.

The Lady Dragons began with a 25-9, 25-8 win over Salem before knocking off Gainesville in three sets, 25-22, 24-26, 15-11.

The third match against Sandy Creek was probably the Lady Dragons’ most competitive match of the day, as Jefferson lost in three sets, 22-25, 30-28, 12-15.

Jefferson faced Gainesville for a second time in the Silver Bracket and defeated the Lady Red Elephants 25-20, 25-15. Jefferson faced Flowery Branch in the Silver Bracket championship and won 25-19, 27-25.

Grace Williams led Jefferson with 27 kills and 17 aces. Abby Wood added 21 kills. Paige Watson tallied 37 assists, while Madison Corbett added 36. Olivia Pryzbysz tallied a team-high 27 digs and Wood contributed 24. Lindsey Nilsen had four blocks and Bre Arbanas added three.

LADY LIONS GO 2-2 AT BRANCH: Lakeview Academy went 2-2 at the Battle of the Branch, defeating Habersham Central (25-13, 25-17) and Johnson (25-6, 25-9), before dropping two straight to Harris County (25-19, 27-25) and North Hall (25-13, 25-22) on Saturday at Flowery Branch High.

Katie White led the Lady Lions with 33 kills, 33 digs and six aces. Katie Gay added 15 kills, 20 digs and six aces and Schyler Miller had 26 digs and six aces. Bailey Towles had 34 assists and 9 aces. Delaney Jarrett added 20 assists and seven aces.

Lakeview will play again on Tuesday at home against Hart County.

LADY VIKINGS GO 5-0 AT EASTSIDE: East Hall went 5-0 in its season opener on Saturday at Eastside. Along the way, the Lady Vikings defeated Newton 25-10, 25-17, Eastside 25-14, 25-13, Heritage Conyers 30-28, 25-19, East Jackson 25-18, 25-12 and Alcovy 25-18, 25-14.

Ashleigh Burnett scored 42 points on serve with 23 aces, 4 assists, 22 kills and 21 digs. Allyson Segars had 22 points on serve with 13 aces, 20 kills, one assist and eight digs.

Savannah Lindsey had 17 points scored on serve, two aces, six assists, two kills and 52 digs. Cassida Shockley had 23 points on serve with 14 aces, 14 kills, 12 digs and 63 assists.

The Lady Vikings return to play Tuesday against Jackson County, Gilmer and Flowery Branch at the East Hall Community Center. Games begin at 5 p.m.

BUFORD WINS TWICE: The Buford softball team began its season with a pair of victories in contests played at South Forsyth High, beating Milton 8-1 before eding the host team 10-9 in eight innings.

Peyton Wolfe picked up the win in the opener, pitching four scoreless innings with four strikeouts and four hits.
Kennedy Kotula earned the save with three innings of relief, striking out two and allowing an earned run on two hits.

Jordan Deep (3-for-4, 2 solo HRs, 4 runs, 2 RBI), Sydney Stavro (2-for-3, 2 runs), Samantha Thomas (3-run HR, 3 RBI) and Remy Hasty (double, RBI) paced Buford offensively in the first game.

Kotula tossed 2 1/3 innings of relief in the second contest to take the pitching victory, allowing an earned run with two strikeouts. Wolfe had the save after coming in with the bases loaded and no outs in the eighth and getting out of the jam in five pitches. Wolfe allowed no hits, runs or errors in the inning of relief.

Deep (2-for-4, double, 2 RBI), Stavro (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), Tessa Daniels (double, 3 RBI) and Kelsey Bennett (RBI) paced the Wolves’ offense in the extra-inning game, which lasted three hours and 15 minutes.

Buford (2-0) faces Loganville at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Flowery Branch High in the multi-site Hawk-Bulldog Tournament.
