Samantha Simonton, 14, of Gainesville, took first place in skeet and second in sporting clays senior/JV girls division at the 2014 Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation National Championships in Sparta, Ill. It was her first year to shoot competitively.

Simonton, a member of the Lake Oconee Shotgun Team, was among more than 2,500 shooters competing in the 2014 championships at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta. It was the largest youth event held for the Scholastic Clay Target Program and Scholastic Pistol Program National Championships.

Ed Fickey has coached Simonton during the past year. The Cherokee gun club allowed her to practice in its facility.
