Woods still school superintendent winner after recount

POSTED: August 1, 2014 12:12 a.m.

Irwin County educator Richard L. Woods was certified Thursday as winner of the Republican runoff for the nomination as state school superintendent, Secretary of State Brian Kemp said.

After the recount, Woods had 199,441 votes, or 50.09 percent, to Michael L. Buck’s 198,741, or 49.91 percent.

Before the recount, Woods’ margin had been 713 votes. The recount, which had been requested by Buck, the chief academic officer at the Georgia Department of Education, trimmed that margin by 13 votes.

Kemp affirmed all counties have provided the total votes tabulated for each candidate to the state.

Certification does not preclude the state from continuing any current investigations related to the primary or from pursuing any future allegations that may arise from the election.
