A mix of northern and southern contra dance music will float out of the Sautee Nacoochee Community Association gym Saturday, July 26, as the three musicians of Free Association perform.

The trio draws their repertoire and style from New England, Quebecois, Celtic, contemporary and old-time tunes. Other influences make their way into the music by a process of free association and comes out through original songs, according to the trio.

Free Association band members are Bob Kirkman on fiddle, Bill Porter on flutes and whistles and Steven Carlberg on piano. Each man has played contra dance music for many years, but the group first played together in 2008 as a pick-up band for the midweek contra dance in Atlanta. Since hitting the road, Free Association has entertained dances in five states and a dozen cities across the Southeast.

The caller for the evening is Deanna Palumbo of Atlanta. She is known for her clear, infectious and melodious voice, as well as her wide experience with different folk dance genres. She has called for public and private functions throughout Atlanta and surrounding areas.

The Sautee Nacoochee contra dance will begin with a free introductory lesson at 7:30 p.m., followed by the regular dance from 8-11 p.m. No partner is needed.

Admission is $9 for nonmembers and $7 for SNCA members. Students receive a $5 discount. Youth 12 and younger may enter for free.

The Sautee Nacoochee Community Association gym is at 283 Ga. 255 N in Sautee.
