The Times seeks World War II veterans for special salute

POSTED: October 25, 2008 5:00 a.m.

It has been 63 years since the end of the largest conflict in world history, and those who fought in it are, and will forever be known as, The Greatest Generation.

Between 2.5 and 3 million World War II veterans survive in the United States, about 50,000 in Georgia. But nationwide, they are passing at a rate of about 900 a day.

For this year's Veterans Day celebration, The Times is providing special coverage honoring local veterans of World War II, including a full list of the war's survivors living in Northeast Georgia.

Veterans and their loved ones are asked to send the service member's name, hometown, branch of service and where they served, plus contact information, by e-mail to veterans@gainesvilletimes.com (please include "veterans" in the subject line); by fax to 770-532-0457; or by mail to Veterans, c/o The Times Newsroom, P.O. Box 838, Gainesville, GA, 30503. Please provide information for surviving World War II veterans only.

All names of veterans received by noon Friday, Nov. 7 will be included in our special pages dedicated to WWII vets.
