Gainesville man expecting call from Garth Brooks

Country fan told he’d be first to know tour’s opening city

POSTED: July 11, 2014 12:42 p.m.

Garth Brooks will announce the first stop of his world tour on Monday, but it won’t be at a press conference.

Gainesville resident Andy Roberts will get a personal phone call from the country artist telling him the location.

Roberts, a longtime fan, attended a Garth Brooks concert in Las Vegas in January when he was chosen out of the audience to ask Brooks a question.

“I was the last person called on,” Roberts said. “When he called on me, it just came out.” He asked what the first city on the tour would be.

At the time, Brooks couldn’t tell Roberts, but he promised he’d call to tell him as soon as he found out.

“I told Andy, I said right there, ‘If you really want to, leave your information. I’ll call you and you’ll be the first guy to know the opening city,” Brooks said at press conference on Thursday.

Roberts, who happened to be watching the press conference, didn’t expect his name to come up.

“You know, I honestly did think he would follow through because he’s honestly all about the fans. But it was still shocking,” he said.

Roberts is not sure how he’ll share the announcement with the rest of the world, but he is sure of one thing.

“My phone will not leave my side on Monday,” he said.
