Wells set to become new North Hall athletic director

POSTED: July 7, 2014 6:19 p.m.

North Hall High Principal Jamey Moore has named former Lanier High football coach and athletic director Billy Wells as his choice to become the school’s new athletic director, pending school board approval. The announcement was made Monday in a press release from Gordon Higgins, Hall County Director of Community Relations and Athletics.

Wells takes over the job previously held by Richard Crumley, who left North Hall earlier this year to become principal at Dawson County High.

Before coming to North Hall, Wells coached football and was athletic director at Lanier in Sugar Hill all four years the school has been open. Prior to that, Wells spent 12 years as a teacher at Collins Hill High in Suwanee.

“I am pleased to recommend Mr. Billy Wells to be hired as an assistant principal and athletic director at North Hall High School,” Moore said. “As a new principal, I am choosing to bring someone that has leadership experience and success leading a high school athletic program to North Hall.

“Coach Wells knows the job and the community. I consider it a blessing that coach Wells lives in North Hall and has children in our feeder schools. The character, work ethic, and vision that he will bring to North Hall High will make him a valuable member of our team as we all work to create opportunities for our students and athletes to succeed.”

Wells led Lanier’s football program to a 14-8 record over the past two seasons, including a first-round victory against Carver-Atlanta in the Class AAAA state playoffs last year. He was also football coach for two seasons (2008-09) at Collins Hill.

Wells said he will not be part of the Trojans’ coaching staff at North Hall.

According to Wells, he initially had little interest in leaving Lanier, but a meeting with North Hall’s administrators made a strong impression on him.

“I wasn’t really looking to make a change when the opportunity at North Hall came to my attention,” Wells said.

“After meeting with North Hall Principal Jamey Moore, Personnel Director Dr. Brad Brown, and Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Dr. Eloise Barron, I had an entirely different view of what my future might be. They inspired me to want to be a better educator and school leader. In addition, I have already embraced the North Hall community in that it has been my family’s home for the past several years.”
