Badge and Bar: Sentencing date set in killing at Peppers Market

POSTED: July 2, 2014 11:54 p.m.

Sentencing has been set for Joseph Williams, the Gainesville man convicted of shooting and killing Adrian Thompson on June 3, 2013, in the parking lot of Peppers Grocery & Market in Gainesville.

Judge Jason Deal will sentence Williams on July 10 in Hall County Superior Court. A jury convicted Williams last week on three counts of murder.

Williams’ attorneys said Thompson was a man with a violent history, and that Williams believed it was his life or Thompson’s after a punch paired with fighting words from Thompson.

The mandatory minimum period of incarceration for a murder conviction is a life sentence, with the possibility of parole after 35 years served. Deal can sentence Williams to life without the possibility of parole.

Court closed for holiday

The Hall County Courthouse will be closed Friday in observance of the Fourth of July.

Business will resume Monday after the long holiday weekend.
