The Local Agenda: Gainesville eyes tourism board appointments

POSTED: July 1, 2014 12:47 a.m.

The Gainesville City Council will approve board members for the new Convention and Visitors Bureau when it meets tonight.

The CVB was created earlier this year and the council is expected to approve the appointments of Grier Todd, general manager of the Fairfield Inn & Suites; Sheri Hooper, executive director of Interactive Neighborhood for Kids; Morgan House, the newly minted manager of the Lake Lanier Olympic Venue; Mike Azotea, general manager of Buffalo Wild Wings; Richard Labriola, general manager of Hilton Garden Inn; Gainesville Parks and Recreation Director Melvin Cooper; and City Manager Kip Padgett.

The council also is expected to approve the appointment of Ab Hayes as assistant city attorney.

In other business, the council will consider approving a rezoning request that would allow Beehive Homes of Gainesville to open an assisted living facility on Park Hill Drive and a request from developer Alcovy-20 to construct 55 single-family homes off Wilson Drive.

Board approves reopening used car lot

The Hall County Board of Commissioners has approved a request from resident Jennings Bryan to reopen a used car lot along Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville.

The lot has been closed for the past two years, a result of the economic recession.

Now, Infinity Auto Sales will soon open.

Bryan said he has leased property along Atlanta Highway to owner Carlos Ruiz in the past.

Governments closed for holiday

Gainesville administration offices, courts and libraries will be closed for Independence Day.

City parks and the Frances Meadows Aquatic Center will remain open.

Hall County’s administrative offices, courts, community centers and libraries will be closed.

Essential public safety and public works personnel will continue service as usual during the holiday. The landfill and compactor sites will remain open.
