Class Notes: New Barrow school superintendent has ties to Hall County

POSTED: June 23, 2014 12:47 a.m.

Chris McMichael will soon step into the role of Barrow County Schools Superintendent.

McMichael, a 1984 graduate of Gainesville High School, is replacing Wanda Creel, who is now superintendent of Gainesville City Schools.

“Isn’t that most interesting?” school board member Sammy Smith asked during a recent meeting. “So we congratulate Chris.”

According to Barrow County News, McMichael has been with the Barrow district for five years. He has been in education since 1995, beginning as a fine arts teacher at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville. He’s also been a principal at elementary schools in Hall County and Cartersville, as well as at County Line Elementary in Barrow.

McMichael’s contract officially begins July 1, as does Creel’s. Creel is replacing retiring Gainesville Superintendent Merrianne Dyer.

Scholarships available for summer camp at Quinlan

Students entering first through eighth grades this upcoming fall have an opportunity to attend summer art camp at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center.

Starting today, there are five more weekly sessions left in the 2014 art camp. They run from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. The weekly camps are $125, or $100 for members. Two-week sessions are $245, or $195 for members.

Participants study art in scientific fields, doing experimental projects like optical illusions, mixing and creating pigment and mixing media to create something new.

Scholarships are available for “exceptional students” with “exemplary artistic skills” and a “yearning to learn,” according to Assistant Director Paula Lindner. Scholarship forms are available via school art instructors; parents of home-schooled students may call 770-536-2575 for application information.

For more information on the summer art camps, to apply for a scholarship or to register, visit quinlanartscenter.org.
