Medical Center Foundation unveils scholarships, renames resource center

Hospital honors couples’ charity

The Medical Center Foundation dedicated The Swoszowski Scholarships on Tuesday and announced the renaming of the Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s Resource Center.

Now The Fraser Resource Center, the Resource Center had been an anonymous donation until this year. Grady and Lillian Fraser did not want to be named as the donors until after their deaths.

“They gave so quietly,” Maggie James, spokeswoman for the foundation, said of the couple. “This is their legacy. This is how they wanted it and how they wanted to be remembered.”

The health sciences library has “created the opportunity to educate future nurses here,” said Jim Moore, chairman of The Medical Center Foundation. “The Fraser Resource Center provides for the medical staff and for patients’ families a wealth of information they can use.”

Along with the Frasers’ donation, scholarship donations from Bob and Wanda Swoszowski also will help local medical students.

“I went to college on a scholarship. If I hadn’t had my scholarship, I could never have gone to college. ... I don’t know if I could have done as well as I did,” said Bob Swoszowski, owner of 12 McDonald’s restaurants in Northeast Georgia.

“I made a little promise to myself. If one day before I got too old I could manage to do it, I was going to provide help for other people. And I’m very proud that this year Wanda and I have been able to provide a number of scholarships. We’re really thrilled about that.”

Of those scholarships, five have been through The Medical Center Foundation.

“The Frasers and the Swoszowskis are making opportunities possible for students and for the public,” James said. “There’s so many things that the hospital can’t afford to do and we rely on philanthropy from donations like theirs to do it.”
