Clermont family mourns drowning victim

POSTED: June 17, 2014 1:14 a.m.

A Clermont family is mourning a young man who drowned Friday at Clearwater Beach, Fla.

In Florida for work, Ryan Terry, 20, was swimming almost 30 yards from shore when he went under.

“They were down there with their boss, him and his dad. The job was not ready and so they decided to go to the beach for the day,” said LeAnne Jarrett, Terry’s aunt.

His boss, Donald L. Duncan, 41, was in the water with him.

“Him and Donny were really close. Donny was trying so hard to get him out he almost had a heart attack,” Jarrett said.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Clearwater Fire and Rescue and police were also called to search for Terry.

Duncan was admitted to a local hospital and was released Saturday morning after observation. He and Terry’s father, Bob Oliver, drove back to Georgia together, she said.

Terry, originally from Virgina, lived with his father and grandfather in Clermont for three years.

“He got his grandma to bring him down here when he turned 17,” Jarrett said. “He said that this was his home. We only had him for about three years and he was as close to us as if we’d had him forever.”

Terry, “was a real fun person,” she said. “He loved hunting and fishing. And riding around with his little dog Shy. He took her everywhere.”

His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Strickland Funeral Home chapel. To assist with funeral costs, the family asks that donations be made to the funeral home at P.O. Box 242, Clermont, GA 30527.
