Times earns 18 statewide awards

The Times earned five first-place awards and 18 overall Friday night in the Georgia Press Association’s annual Better Newspaper Contest.

The awards were presented at the GPA’s annual banquet at Jekyll Island.

The Times earned first-place awards for page one, layout and design and sports section among the state’s mid-sized daily papers.

Individual first-place honors were won by reporter Carly Sharec for education coverage and Nat Gurley for spot news photo.

Second-place honors went to The Times for general excellence, special issues (high school football preview) and business coverage. Individual second-place awards went to Savannah King for religion coverage, Jared Putnam for sports photo and Scott Rogers for photo essay and web photo.

Third-place awards were given for editorial page and newspaper website, plus individual awards to Gurley for sports photo and feature photo, Emma Witman for hard news writing and R. Keith Hatchell for information graphics.

“It’s always gratifying to be recognized by others in the newspaper industry for doing a good job,” General Manager Norman Baggs said. “These awards recognize the hard work done by an exceptionally dedicated team of journalists throughout the year.”
