Brenau squad places third in national contest

For the third time in its three-year history, Brenau University’s Golden Tigers intercollegiate cheerleading team finished near the top of U.S. rankings when it placed third in the National Cheerleaders Association college nationals tournament.

The squad from the Gainesville-based university racked up an 85.05 score at the tournament finals April 11. Davenport University from Grand Rapids, Mich., won the contest with 91.9 points. St. Gregory’s University of Shawnee, Okla., placed second with 88.63 score.

After the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics recognized competitive cheerleading as an intercollegiate sport, Brenau was one of the early adopters when it started its team in 2011. In 2012, the all-female team came away from the nationals in Daytona Beach ranked No. 2 in the nation in its class. Last year, the Golden Tigers finished fourth.

Despite its success, the Brenau team is still relatively young. Of the 24 members, only four are seniors and four are juniors.

In early April, Brenau’s coach signed Alyssa Biggs of Commerce to fill one of the four vacancies after May graduation.
